More info

Martín Miguel Juan de Mata Güemes Montero de Goyechea y la Corte (Salta, Viceroyalty of
the Río de la Plata, February 8, 1785 -
Cañada de la Horqueta, Salta, June 17, 1821), known as Martín Miguel de Güemes, was an
Argentina military man and politician who carried out an outstanding performance
in the War of Independence of Argentina. For six years he was governor of Salta.
With very few resources he waged a constant guerrilla war, known as the Gaucho War,
stopping six invasions of the Spanish armies, thus preserving
the rest of the current Argentine territory free of realistic invaders.
